What has changed, what have we learned, and where are we going?
The event, which brings together conversations around the culture of giving every year, will be entirely online, free and accessible in 2020, and will feature Dan Pallotta, Sofia Michelakis (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), Asha Curran (GivingTuesday), Gil Giardelli, Selma Moreira (Baobá Fund), Maria Sylvia de Oliveira (Geledés), Fábio Porchat and more.
It seemed like any other year, until the new coronavirus pandemic changed everything. Economic and social inequalities became even more evident – and we all gained the commitment to redefine reality. Generosity manifested itself right at the beginning of 2020 and transformed it into a record year for donations: we surpassed R$ 6 billion raised through live streams, crowdfunding campaigns, and by large companies and philanthropists.
To discuss this revolution in the culture of giving in the country and the world, the 3rd Giving Seminar will bring together guests to discuss what we have learned and what we will take away from 2020, the year of giving. Organized by the MOL Institute and the Bem Maior Movement, with sponsorship from BTG Pactual and iFood, the event will take place on December 2nd, 3rd and 4th, starting at 5 pm. The broadcast will be free, online, accessible and subtitled in LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language), and will air on the YouTube channels of the MOL Institute and the Bem Maior Movement. The Seminar is also supported by the Movement for a Culture of Giving.
“It was a year unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before, including in terms of the culture of giving. The topic gained traction. Now, it needs to be strengthened in conversations happening everywhere, from the family dinner table to the table where executives of large companies make decisions,” says Rodrigo Pipponzi, co-founder of the MOL Institute.
The event will present firsthand data showing the social transformations that have taken place during the pandemic, as well as metrics to guide fundraising strategies for the coming years. Good examples of solutions that raised funds in 2020 will also be highlighted.
“In one of the most challenging moments in our history, we saw the agility and strength that multi-sector alliances can have to mobilize, coordinate, and direct resources. This illustrates the potential of philanthropy in Brazil and motivates us to work even harder for a culture of giving and generosity,” says Carola Matarazzo, executive director of the Bem Maior Movement.
The program will feature international guests. On Wednesday (2), humanitarian activist Dan Pallotta talks about the misconceptions and perspectives for funding the third sector. Sofia Michelakis, director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, presents on Thursday (3) the Giving Pledge, a commitment that proposes that billionaires donate a large part of their assets to causes. On Friday (4), Asha Curran, CEO of GivingTuesday, addresses the global visibility of Giving Day and the awakening of generosity in a year of calamities.
The broadcast will also feature conversations that touch on topics of great visibility today: on Friday (4), Selma Moreira (Baobá Fund) and Maria Sylvia de Oliveira (Geledés), will debate, moderated by Patrícia Lobaccaro, the culture of donation as a tool to boost the anti-racist struggle. Later that same day, comedian Fábio Porchat will talk about how to convince celebrities to get more involved and influence donations. And researcher on the future Gil Giardelli will give a presentation on the future of fundraising with the use of new technologies in favor of social impact.
“It’s time to break through the bubble and show that donation is not charity: it’s a civic gesture that carries the power to shape the world we want to see in the future,” says Roberta Faria, co-founder of the MOL Institute and moderator of the event.
According to Richard Sippli, institutional relations representative for the Bem Maior Movement and moderator of the event, the flourishing of a more generous society is only possible through changes in individual habits: "We need to stop fearing empathy and understand that it is the compass of the future."
