Donating Day is coming, and have you already chosen an initiative to support?

For Movimento Bem Maior

Nov 2022

On November 29th, Giving Day , a special date to promote and celebrate generosity. In addition to raising funds for social and environmental causes, having a day with this name on the calendar means an incentive to engage more people in philanthropy and represents an invitation to come together to combat inequalities.

The more information transmitted and the greater empathy generated, we reinforce the culture of donation in society. We encourage the gesture of donating to become a habit among Brazilians so that we can achieve systemic changes. So, while preparations are being made for this great international event of solidarity and love, you can take the opportunity to choose a cause to support and be another member of this transformative current.

A brief history

Donating Day was born in 2012 in the United States with the simple idea of encouraging people to do good. Americans named the date Giving Tuesday (Donation Tuesday, in Portuguese) and chose the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving to promote the celebration.

This initiative became an international movement, which is officially present in more than 80 countries, including Brazil. The name of the event may vary – for example, Un Día para Dar (A Day to Give) in Argentina and Día de Donar (Day of Giving) in Uruguay – but it always carries the spirit of solidarity.

Donating Day was held for the first time in Brazil in 2013 and, the following year, the celebration in our country became part of the global movement. Comparing the last five editions of the Brazilian event, there was a great increase in the results achieved.

In 2017, the value of donations was R$678 thousand, the impact of the action on social media reached 16.4 million people and there were local campaigns in eight cities. In 2021, R$2.3 million were donated online (an increase of almost 240%), more than 23 million people were reached through social media with the message about donation (growth of 40%) and there was the mobilization of 30 community campaigns.

This movement is led in Brazil by ABCR (Brazilian Association of Fundraisers) in partnership with the MOL Institute, with Movimento Bem Maior as one of its strategic supporters.

How to engage

Any person, group, civil society organization, company, community and public body can participate in Donate Day – everyone carries out their own activities that encourage donation, in whatever way they want. Interested parties can access the website , access free support materials and start organizing their campaign to celebrate generosity on November 29th.

Donating Day also leads us to reflect on so many different causes that need to be supported in a country like Brazil, with its gigantic social injustice. And, amid a “huge sea” of complex problems, an online tool – produced by IDIS (Institute for the Development of Social Investment) and the MOL Institute – helps connect those interested in donating with projects: the Discover platform Your Cause , a quick test that points out suggestions for paths to follow according to your purpose.

This test asks some fun questions such as “In a trip to the past, who do you want to have dinner with?”, in which the options for the answer are Charles Darwin, Nelson Mandela, Frida Kahlo, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Leonardo da Vinci.

According to your answers, the platform learns a little about your thoughts on life and, in the end, presents the causes that match your style, giving indications of forms of engagement (such as films or books on the topic), citing personalities who fought this same fight and suggesting organizations that work in this same segment.

Discover organizations

If the system identifies, for example, that you are concerned about problems such as hunger, the platform can refer you to the humanitarian organization Sefras (Ação Social Franciscana), which deals with this issue and combats rights violations and economic and social exclusion. of extremely vulnerable populations.

If your style is focused on education and sport, Fundação Gol de Letra can be introduced to you. The work, which was born from the commitment of former Brazilian national team players Raí and Leonardo, serves children and young people, combining educational and social assistance practices with community development and that of their families, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Those who are more intensely connected to nature may be suggested to donate to the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS). This civil society organization disseminates and implements knowledge about sustainable development, contributing to the conservation of the Amazon.

Donating helps change the world. Accept the invitation to celebrate the generosity made by Donation Day, take the Discover Your Cause test to learn about important projects that match your story, make donating a part of your routine and join this movement for social transformation.
